Germany–Sardinia: growth and opportunities in the Mediterranean
The relationship between Germany and Sardinia is becoming increasingly significant within the regional economic landscape, extending well beyond tourism. Data collected and presented by the Cipnes Gallura Research Center describe a now mature relationship, supported by established industrial presence, rapidly growing trade flows, and international demand capable of generating value across multiple supply chains.
From a production standpoint, Germany ranks among the most significant foreign countries in terms of turnover and employment among foreign-controlled companies operating on the island, confirming a structural and long-term role within the regional economic system.
Even more evident is the acceleration in trade flows. In recent years, Sardinian exports to Germany have recorded particularly strong growth, strengthening the position of the German market among the main European destinations. At the same time, the volume of imports confirms a stable, two-way relationship typical of integrated economies.
Alongside industry and trade, Germany continues to represent a key market for boating. North-Eastern Sardinia maintains a central role as a Mediterranean hub for recreational boating and superyachts, with a consistent and significant German presence even outside the peak season. Data on vessels and the value of large yachts confirm the territory’s ability to attract international mobile wealth and generate widespread economic impact.
Analyses based on ISTAT sources and the spending parameters of the Bank of Italy also make it possible to estimate the overall economic impact of the German market beyond traditional tourism statistics. By including second homes and boating, a total economic value emerges that ranks among the highest for Sardinia, with annual spending levels placing Germany among the most high-yield markets.
This scenario opens up a further perspective: transforming an already strong demand into a concrete basis for new investments, particularly in boating, advanced services, and innovation. In this direction, instruments such as the ZES Unica and ERDF (FESR) funds contribute to strengthening Sardinia’s attractiveness for foreign investors through tax advantages and administrative simplification.
The overall picture, also confirmed in Düsseldorf, highlights a strategic relationship involving industry, tourism, and boating as integrated drivers of economic development, reinforcing Sardinia’s international positioning and supporting a more competitive, market-oriented growth path.
